Quarry Bandstand, Shrewsbury - 18th June 2017
For years Melanie has wanted to play in the bandstand at Shrewsbury, on Sunday this became possible.
One of the hottest days so far this year, and it was our turn to play in the fabulous setting of Shrewsbury Bandstand. The beautiful Quarry Park, with the River Severn flowing by and the Dingle attracted lots of people looking for shade.
Earlier in the day the Shrewsbury Half Marathon had been run, part of it going through the park along by the river. So there were lots of people milling about enjoying the sunshine. Our very own Joanne Perkins had the great idea of running the half marathon before playing in the band. Well done Jo, a huge achievement running in the intense heat then playing trombone all afternoon!
From the outset you could tell the sound was amazing with the acoustics in the bandstand. Usually when we play outside it is on grass which absorbs the sound but this was totally different. As we worked our way through the programme, we could see people tapping their feet, enjoying the different pieces we played. These included arrangements from Coldplay to Sing Sing Sing, with lots of show and film music in between, so there was something for everyone.
People visiting from Huddersfield said it had made their day listening to the band. At the end, a lady in her 90's, was dancing to Swing the Mood, with a tear in her eye, recalling happy memories from years gone by.
It was a long hot day, but a great experience, enjoyed by all.
