Gill Rees - Tenbury Town Band

When did you start the band?

Initially, Julie my daughter, grandchildren Alysson, Harry & Max were already members of Tenbury Town Band when I joined 12 years ago, after a little persuasion and tuition from Julie.

Andy, my son-in-law joined us later making it a real “family affair”.

Being a member has given me immense satisfaction, enjoyment and with each new piece of music – a challenge.

Band Tours:

I have toured with the band to Gibraltar, Eurodisney, twice to Pont de Casse and Durrington. An unforgettable memory! playing on with a broken wrist on tour in France.

I would recommend anyone, especially the more mature person to consider playing a musical instrument and join the band. “Good for the brain and keeping fingers supple”.

To give my favourite music is almost an impossibility, so I pass this to our loyal supporter Nevill, my husband who has chosen “One Moment in Time”

Julie Kitson

Alto Saxophone / Apprentice Flute

Julie Kitson - Tenbury Town Band

When did you start the band?

I joined the Band in 1997 and played clarinet until 2010 when I moved to the saxophone section to play tenor sax. I have been on the Band committee for some years and have held the post of Treasurer since 2004.

I play alto sax and occasionally xylophone too, and one of my daftest moments was playing Flight of the Bumblebee on the xylophone dressed up as a bumblebee! For the finale I was chased round the Regal Theatre and swatted by Ben Parker with a fishing net!

My greatest moments have to be when my pupils become better than me! It is a proud moment to see them become key players and soloists in the Band eg Annabel and Francesca on clarinet, and Gill (my Mum) and Georgina on alto sax. Also watching my sons progress and become competent musicians through the Band - Max on percussion and then onto French horn and Harry on clarinet, bass clarinet, bari sax and now trombone.

My most significant moment was playing in Keith’s Concert in 2007.

There have been some very funny moments particularly when Band members dress up to enhance their solos! Steve dressed up as a reindeer and Harry dressed up as a sugar plum fairy to name just a couple. There have been a few alcohol related incidents too!!!

I have been on most tours since 1997 – Gibraltar 2002, Eurodisney 2007, two trips to Pont du Casse 2005 and 2010, and Durrington Walls 2010. Just recently I have taken part in the Wessex Band Summer School tours with my husband (Andy on trombone) and our family which we have enjoyed immensely.

I have loved playing the more challenging pieces over the years particularly Pirates of the Caribbean, An American in Paris, Mars from the Planet Suite and the Dave Brubeck selection and I always enjoy playing Hootenanny out at fetes, but the one piece that always puts shivers down my spine is Highland Cathedral.

Lorraine Gray

Baritone Saxophone

Lorraine Gray - Tenbury Town Band

When did you start the band?

I joined  the band in 1986 playing clarinet, since then I have played the Bass clarinet and I now play the Bari Sax which I love! I have been part of the Band Committee since about 1994 first as Young Members Representative and now I have been the Band Chairman for many years . I enjoy being able to offer our members the same oppportunitiies I had when I first joined the band,  to make music accessible to all.

What is your funniest/ daftest/greatest moment in the band?

I have to say that playing  at The Regal on stage with The Coldstream Guards Regimental Band has to be one of the most memorable moments with the band.

Band tours

I have been on all of the Band Tours except France 2010 which is why Dixon Bear was sent as mine and Michelle's Mascot.

Favourite piece of music?

Hallelujah
